Jordan Figueiredo – How I Lost 50 lbs

This is an amazing guest post by a good friend of mine, Jordan Figueiredo, who runs an awesome blog – The Healthy Teacher.

The following is a recollection of Jordan’s amazing transformation story as he battled his way to losing a ridiculous 50lbs! Jordan is a true fitness bloomer and I hope you enjoy reading his story as much as I did.

Hello Fitness Bloomers!

My name Jordan , and I have been a Bloom to Fit reader since it’s inception and believe it is one of the best fitness blogs around.

Srdjan kindly asked if I would share the details of my significant body transformation to inspire fellow fitness bloomers.  So here it goes!

I need to preface this by telling you that I am a physical education teacher, I studied Kinesiology at University and I am a sports fanatic.  What the previous sentence doesn’t say is that I was an overweight child, teen, and adult that suffered from asthma, eczema, and ridicule for many years, despite my best efforts.

You would think that a person involved in sports, and interested in the human body would be able to keep their weight under control and lead a healthy life.  Not me…..

Being teased by my coaches and childhood acquaintances for being chubby was a challenging experience for me.  By the age of 12 I was searching for ways to change my body.  I didn’t want to have a 6-pack or anything crazy, I just wanted to feel normal.

This quest continued unsuccessfully for some time (6 years).  It wasn’t until I stumbled on a popular diet called the Zone, that I had any success with weight loss.  At the age of 18 I was able to lose 20 LBS and get to a manageable 180 LBS.

After high school I went to University and studied Kinesiology at Wilfrid Laurier University.  It felt like I worked out all the time, however I couldn’t help but gain weight (sadly, I couldn’t even blame it on the drinking…I was never much of a beer crusher).  When I graduated and went to teachers college I was pushing 200 LBS.  Most of my peers would have considered me chubby at the time…not quite fat, although I thought different.

Two years later, and despite my best efforts I ballooned to 215 LBS just after my wedding, which was three years after landing a job as a PE teacher!

Great, “another overweight physical education teacher”, I thought to myself.  I started feeling embarrassed and ashamed at work, almost as if I was an imposture.  Preaching the benefits of healthy eating, and exercise while not being in control of my own body.  I needed to lose weight and get in shape for myself, and the greater good.  My livelihood and sanity would depend on it.

I consider myself a somewhat intelligent dude, with a lot of determination, so gaining control of my weight and my life became my new mission.

My Stats September 2009

Weight:  216 LBS,
Waist Size:  40 inches
My Goal:  Lose 50 LBS

Before @ 216lbs

Here is what I did:

  • Researched online for days,
  • Tried to find the best free information I could,
  • Found Mark’s Daily Apple,
  • Bought the Primal Blueprint by Mark Sisson,
  • Devoured every page and put the lifestyle into practice,
  • Ditched grains and most dairy plus limited my sugar consumption;
  • Continued online research;
  • Learned about intermittent fasting;
  • Used it, practiced it, lived it (roughly one 24 hr fast once a week);
  • Found Fitness Black Book;
  • Started lifting weights again, but with a solid plan this time.

My Stats July 2010

Weight:  165 LBS
Waist Size:  32 inches
My Goal:  Accomplished!

After @ 165lbs

I may have lost 51 pounds, and 8 inches, but I gained so much more.

I had a new found confidence.  My classes were more enjoyable because they were authentic.  I was living the life I asked my students to live and everything fell into place.  I started a blog about my experience with fun articles about weight loss, healthy recipes, workout routines and I continue to write today.

We must continue to pursue our health and wellness goals, and never stop learning!  My university education didn’t help me achieve my weight loss – my desire for new information did!

Thanks to free blogs like this one, there is no excuse for not getting in shape!

    Nice work man! It’s great to see that you were able to achieve such awesome results from your dedication and commitment. Your experience with weight loss definitely carries over into your blog because you know first-hand what it takes to get there. Also, Primal Blueprint is one of the best health and fitness books I’ve read and I’d recommend it to anyone who wants to get in great shape and enjoy a healthier lifestyle.
